That’s me with the rapidly diminishing box of books. It was far easier taking it out of the room than it was bringing it in.
The Ravencon book launch of RAUM was a big success, and I have a lot of people to thank for it. First and foremost, Mark C. Lucas, aka O Hai Mark, aka the genius behind TERRIBLE MOVIES WITH WONDERFUL PEOPLE. Mark is a mainstay at the better conventions, where his room parties have reached legendary status. Knowing he would be at Ravencon, knowing that a book launch party is a swell way to let folks know you have a book out, and knowing little else, I asked if I could piggyback on his party and he did me a solid I will never forget. From 7 to 9 on Saturday it all about me and the book.
It seems laughable to say this now but we talked beforehand about how there was a lot going on at that time and that we would consider it a success if around 20 people showed up. Yeah, I have no idea how many actually passed through, but I could have been counting by twenties and still had fingers left over. It was packed! And many were in a book buying frame of mind, especially when Mark and the lovely Carla Brindle talked me up like this was their chance to get in on the ground floor of the next Stephen King.
(Carla lights up every room, especially when she is wearing something literally made of lights. Looking for a house in Bedford, Forest, Lynchburg, Roanoke, Salem or Vinton? You’ll find no better realtor!)
I can have a hard time taking praise, but Mark, Carla, and, well everyone could not have been kinder.
And I sold a mess of books! Now I just have to hope they enjoy the story and leave good reviews.
Outside of that, Ravencon was a joy. Got to see a bunch of people I see far too infrequently, and made some new friends. Whenever I do this I inevitably leave people out but here goes; Dana d’Gaia, Syrinx, Hunter Cook… aaaa, I suck at this.
It was GREAT seeing Melissa McArthur there, since she was the one who acquired RAUM for Falstaff and got the whole thing going. I think that picture of me up there is while I am signing a book to her.
I got to meet John Dimes, aka Dr. Sarcofiguy, who is a hoot and a holler. This guy has the greatest sense of humor ever, by which I mean he laughs at my jokes. I hope to see a lot more of this guy in the future.
A lot of the Falstaff crowd were at Jordancon, but a few, like Samamntha Bryant, were at Ravencon, representing. You should check out her series from Falstaff.
Got to see my dear friends Jerry and Jenn Chandler after far too long a time. That’s always a good thing.
I’ll just have to keep adding to this as I remember people. In my defense, I’m very tired. Mark not only hosted the party, he allowed me to share the room, which was great but we stayed up VERY late. I really can’t thank him enough for his generosity. He even insisted on buying a book, when by all rights he should have just accepted me handing him one, but that’s the sort of stand-up guy he is.
It was a weekend of great things and it’s always a little hard to come back down, though it’s also always great to get home to Shonna and the cats. I’ve been battling Bronchitis for a few weeks now and this did take a lot out of me, but it’s an amazing feeling to finally see the book launched. I only hope now that people enjoy RAUM and leave some nice feedback and reviews.
My deepest gratitude to all who came to the party and even more to those who bought a book!
